Hi guys im getting Air Lockers installed next week in my GU and i am looking at mounting the compressor in the engine bay behind the dual battery on the passenger side.Is this the best place for it or is there a better option that i should look at??????????????

Many prefer to locate the compressor under a seat, especially if the unit is susceptible to water damage.

Hi MR MAC GU. I have compressor mounted in engine bay on passenger side and have not had problems.

I have a cd mounted under a seat that I worry about more, especially since I got stranded in a bog hole and took in water

Cheers

You make a good point Knackers. My track buddy got some water in on our last outing and his compressor stopped working momentarily. The other thing to consider is if the compressor is also used to re-inflate tyres it can get a bit hot under the seat. He stated after that incident that he wished he had placed it under the rear seat which is higher & remained dry.

compressor mount postion

i fitted a compressor under the bonnet and had some trouble with dust blocking up the filter especially when driving on outback tracks eg bulldust.it can prematurely wear it out if unchecked.
also the length of wiring should be as conveniently and practicle as short as possible as the greater the length the higher the ressistance and the more current draw and the compressor will lose some efficiency as some compressors have a limited cycle time, if used for more than just lockers eg. tyre inflation

More good points, certainly worthy of consideration. I have not yet mounted my compressor, but due to the size of the case, its my intention to do so soon. I would need 8# (4.4mm) wire to have it located under the rear seat which at this time is most likely. The wire will tap off an auxiliary power wire to the trailer connection with a circuit-breaker / warning-light dash-mounted.

do patrols really need diff locks they are the ultimate in 4x4 s anyway!!!
especially GQs
i think no matter were you mount it,use as minimal connections and joins as possible.
in some cases hard wiring is the go its a pain but it is reliable as the connection wont get hot and melt
with hi current draws

I considered locating my compressor in the engine bay. With limited space, and the need to get in there after a mud run to clean, it just seems more practical to mount it somewhere else that is not currently utilised and where the hose attachment would be clean & convenient when inflating the tyres.

I had one located under the bonnet on the drivers side of the Hilux i used to have. I was in Karratha, so it got a good work out with all the beach and rock driving we used to do. Only used it for inflating the tyres afterwards but never had a single problem with it over-heating or getting too much dust in it. I ended up drowning the 'lux (thats another story, with photos) and the compressor was about the only thing that survived.

Got one for the cruiser i now own. Mounted under the bonnet again. I'm running a front locker and haven't had the opportunity yet to do a "real" test on it all. Personally, i think under the bonnet is better, but it's a personal choice. It's higher up than under the seat and when inflating the tyres you get more air to it. Just my opinion...

On my GQ I mounted my arb compresser under the bonnet and has been there for nearly 18 months going through plenty of over bonnet mud holes and river crossings with no problems at all

When you turn the lockers off you can get a vapour of diff oil. I have mine located where you suggest and have had no problems.

In some cases have had a small amount of diff oil pushed back up the line and out the around the compressor when disengaging - would be nasty if it ended up on the carpet.

If you put it under the bonet, u can spray it with WD40 to prevent water/mud.

My experiances is not to have anything electrical on the floor because like Knackers said, if u get bogged it will get wet.

I've had water over the bonnet plenty of times and the carpet has stayed dry.

WD40 may help it to get it in there tho (under the bonnet that is). ;)

Mine is installed under the passenger seat .I n regards to diff oil smell when turning them off, I installed two vent lines of the soleniods to under the patrol. So when turning off the air line depressure's to outside. You will find after a while a slight oil mist spray around the vent line's.

They need diff locks, transfer gears, large tyres, huge lifts, winches and VERY strong recovery points at the front. That way the cruiser driver doesn't get as dirty when recovering the datsun:p

But back on the ranch, I have my compressor mounted under the bonnet, just behind the drivers front shock mount. never had a problem and just checking the filter every now and then stops any problems (Speaking of which I need to do tomorrow).
Having filled the inside of my cruiser with muddy water, I'm glad I have nothing electrical mounted on the floor.

got mine under the pass seat but i just put a exhaust kit on it that put the back flow back outside the car

Got mine mounted in the engina bay ;)

I was able to buy a pre fabricated mounting plate from ARB to suit my compressor and the vehicle, (in this case a Troopcarrier).

Considering the amount of Patrols on the road, id be surprised if they didnt make one for them aswell!

Never had any trouble with the comp, or how or where it is mounted. :)
