Went to a lovely campground at the northern end of the Mitchell river national park not too long back and it was bloody awesome...

facilities : Long dropper....

Thats it.. and a lovely river that runs around the perimeter of the camp ground...

Easy to get to, its about 50km north of the highway, follow the signs to the DEN OF NARGUN, but instead of turning into the DEN road, continue on till you hit the Angusvale rd... 16km of decent dirt/gravel and a senic view over the camp ground about 2km from the destination...

Have ya got gps co-ords for this place? Sounds like a great place to start a new O'Tooles.

I havent got the co-ords, but im sure you could work it out from the link below... or just keep zooming out to see where to go...

Google Maps

Ive also included a photo from the road at a "scenic lookout" about 2km from the camp...

This place is HUGE... only problem is the lack of firewood.. national park.....

That place looks awsome........ Bugger National that means no dogs. Still might get the Mrs to take a trip up there and have a look around.

I grew up in Bairnsdale which isnt far from Angusvale. Beauty of a spot and its not uncommon to have see at least 50 tents pitched there at once!

Pretty sure there is a nice easy 4x4 track at the southern end, winds along the river for a while
before heading up hill and out again.

Traveller, Im pretty sure that track you are referring to is called "hortons" track or something similar... It was closed when we went there.. (Summer so not seasonal....)

It has a gate there now and will be closed indefinite,Now lets say that gate was not there (in my opinion it shouldnt) you used to go to Angusvale to the Slalem Rapids,Half way along this track on the left is another track called Rock Track i think about 200 metres long if that to the river crossing to Hortons on the other side, which then joins Calvi Track on the Calvi Hill,Like Gippsurfer mentioned, (beware of this crossing its dangerous, plenty of people hav come undone here including myself,I went across two weeks after flooding,i did not know this till i got home and looked on the internet,i've crossed this river a few times but it was just a bit full and the current was a bit/lot stronger and just around stomach height and i am about 5"7 lol,The Hilux began to float about 3/4 across and spun me around and i floated down the river backwards and caught up half way on a rocky river bank and gully to my luck,My friend winched me out in his 80 series, still floated down when crossing the gully till the winch took up.

If you continue on you stop at a small camp area you cannot go any further than this, unless you want to walk the walking track (The Mitchell River Walking Track follows the west bank of the river downstream from Angusvale through the gorge to the Den of Nargun. This is a two-day walk of 17 km. Half way through the gorge is Billy Goat Bend with a spectacular, semi-circular cliff known as the Amphitheatre)Parks Victoria: Mitchell River National Park page ,To leave on the right is Angusvale Track which in turn comes to a T intersection,Go left and it takes you to the Amphitheater (which is worth checking out, small creek crossing on the way and shaley rocky areas),Go right it takes you back to Mitchell River Access Road,Then if you turn left your back to Dargo/Bairnsdale rd or left back to Angusvale..
