air box blow out

Due to my patrol been duel fuel, it back fires through the air box every now and then. It has blown a hole through the lower part of the box, and to get a new one from nissan will cost me over $400 just for the bottom piece. Was wondering if anyone new if there was someone who made aftermarket ones? i have tried to find someone but can not. Cheers

hey Buddy.
Your best bet would be to go to the wreckers and get the base box from them. I dont and have never heared of any body who makes after market base boxes or Nissan Patrol after market boxes. But I could be wrong as I have never needed to find one.

ive rang around a few wreckers and they have told me i would be better of getting one through nissan, as it is such a commen problem they are hard to come by. If it kept doing it i thought an aluminium one would better if they made them.

Can not help

Can not help with airbox,but would suggest that to prevent it happening again
that if your system is injected to replace it with a Mixer.If you do have a Mixer,
take it to a lpg specialist and have the system tuned properly.we make and
distribute lpg kits at work and though we sell them ,none of us would have
an injected system.Mixers are basic but no trouble.

Thanks mate, what is a mixer?

Basically it adds the lpg to the intake air and can be adjusted for the correct
fuel/air ratio. (No backfiring).Will talk to our tech guy tommorow and see
what he comes up with. Cheers Peter.

Gidday Marky,tech bloke reckons the cheapest and easiest way to fix
your problem is to check your ignition system.Leads and coil etc and
then to fit a backfire tube which goes before the air intake sensor.

does it only happen when you start it on gas, if so, start it on petrol, then switch to gas.
Can also be caused by pressing the accelerator when startiing (on gas).

Hi marky this was a very common problem on vn and vp commadores with auto transmission when converted to gas what happens is when you start the car it automaticaly starts on petrol and then switchs over to gas if it does this just as you take off it gets to much gas at once and back fires. on my fathers vn he found that after starting he slowly brought up the revs a littel (for a couple of seconds) it would swicth over without a prob.
also there is some one around making aluminium ones as i seem one a while ago on ebay. try this mob as i know they do aluminium parts of my machine Coffs Harbour 4WD Centre

can you retro fit either a GQ Patrol pre cleaner, or GU airbox, or maybe even a hilux/surf airbox.
A little bit of work, but atleast they are metal, or made from decent thickness plastic.

if you should have enough room, just make sure you get the correct angles so that the original air intake pipes line up, I have seen and done this before for a mates patrol, works a treat.

Another option is cut some 2-3 inch holes in the airbox and using a fine thread of silicon or other glue (only fine) stick some circles of plastic or aluminium over the holes , they blow out rather than the whole air box blows up.

Did it with a 96 Bravo dual fuel - Airboxes for them are as rare as rocking horse s*it and expensive.

You can buy an alloy one off eBay. $470
Made for LPG. Has a relief valve in the lid. Not sure if it works but looks good.

One trick i learnt a while back is to put a hole (or bunch of holes)in the pipe between the mixer and manifold ,then slide a stubby holder (wetsuit type) over the pipe. When car backfires, the stubby holder blows off then you put your spare one on.
Used to work perfectly on VN-VS Dunnydoors.
