Resurrecting a somewhat old thread, but has anyone been through the area in the last month ? How dry is everything, what are the track conditions like ?

Good question RKD I would also be interested to know how the resent rains have affected the aria, creeks and so on. Might have to have a look out there one weekend when it is a bit cooler.

If you do,check out the size of Silent creek camping area - how many cars/campers etc could it hold.
We will have to organise a camp there some time soon.

Just looking over some maps of Abercrombie, lots of gates on the east side of the park, main entrance on the west side. Can you get in from the east, or what is the best way in from Wombian caves rd.

Go in from the West & out by the East - (East - IF IT'S OPEN it's fun).
Abercrombi is steep but easy TRACKS - very pleasant camping & driving.

Pop out of wombean and turn right and go a few k then left on to felled timber rd then on to brass walls fire trail you will see a sign 4wd acsess only and a gate just shut it when you go in:D
i like to take little bald hill fire trail but you can turn right on to the link rd if towing a trailer
i took 8 cars in a few years ago and we stayed at silent creek, plenty of room there for a big group and still on the river
dont forget to check out the foot bridge on retreat fire trail and ledinghams hut
have funn and take a few pics for us:cool:

Went in over 3 days just passed ...
First off, the road from Hadley to Ballyroe does not exist, there is private property of both sides of the river and if google tells you to go through it, it's bloody LYING, which meant a 100 odd km detour via crookwell->taralga->arkstone rd to the park entrance.

Once there, having low range imho is a must as some of the tracks will test your driving and approach paths to the fullest. Whilst my troopy had 0 issues going through any of the hills, my mate in his troopy with no rear diff lockers did have a few issues on the dusty 30 degree inclines. 2 minutes of roadbuilding and reversing / re-approaching solved that real quick.

Silent creek campsite has a shiteload of bugs and mozzies that want to eat you, we stayed at The Beach and loved it.

The east entrance was open but one of the tracks had a giant log across it and our chainsaw wasn't big enough to cut that through.

Bonus: crossing retreat river.

Go in via the West side - your shore to make it then - If the East is open you can go out that way - it's more fun. It comes out not far from the other entrance.

Hi Tez and Mel, we went in via lukes fire trail from wombyan caves road came out at oberon rd traveled the black stuff down the rd about 1 klm then turned left onto the fire trail to abercrombie it is sign posted on oberon rd, we stayed at the beach. Spent easter 2009 there track was in good condition steep in some parts, we took the camper in had a great time didn't experience too many mozzies. enjoy your trip if you are going this week end, wish we could join you but have wedding to go to, perhaps Anzac day week end if you guys want to go we might tag along with you.
