HI everyone,
Ive been driving 4x4 for a while and have never had any problems but every time Im out with another vehicle they tell me they did a 4x4 training course and learned heaps (which they pass on anyway)
I have some time off work coming up and thought it might be fun (and educational) to do on holidays.
Can anyone advise of a good course in Vic - east of Melb? prefer midweek.

Also let me know if you did a course and the providers had bad/arrogan attitudes so I can give them a wide berth

hope to hear from you soon.

Theres one run down at Sandown, can't think of the mob who run it at the moment.
Maybe give Sandown Race-course a ring as a starting point.

No disrespect here, but the course layout is fairly basic & whilst they have good instructors, there are better ones about. (I used to work for that organisation).

I did a few training courses & think you cant go wrong with 'SAFETREK'. Jim Kennedy runs the courses with a theory night then a full day of driving on 'real' tracks. When I did the course, the on road stuff was done in Toolangi.

Check it out on the web.

No offense taken as I wasn't recommending them, just putting forward the fact they are there.I haven't done the course or worked for them so I have no issues with them.
The SAFETREK sounds a pretty good idea.

I have done courses with PNL 4WDriving both through work and in my own time. The courses are accredited - you get a ticket - and have a good mix of theory and practical work. PNL's website is Welcome to PNL 4WDriving

An intermediate course runs for two days.

I quite like the look at PNL here in Victoria because they do a Night drive as part of the course... The one thing I have never HAD to do...

I notice it was one of the thread recomendations how does it compare with others out there?

I use PNL for work; the training is accredited and they are used by other govt agencies. In fact, I have ten staff doing training with PNL this week and next week.

One of the things I took away from my last training course with PNL was a recommendation to do as much training as possible with different training providers because each one will have something different to offer.

Sure enough, I did MJOC training and picked up some new tips and techniques. Of course, one of the benefits of club training is that it's free:)

4wd course

Hi,

I'm relatively new to 4wd but have booked in to do the 4WD Victoria proficiency at the end of this month. I've heard lots of good stuff about it, but told to take extra pair of jocks!!!!
The practical is out at Werribee proving grounds.

Hello,
I did my course there years ago.Good set up and lay out terrain wise, watch your side steps if you have them. You will have fun and gain some knowlage.
But,don,t get me wrong.I don,t think this is an accredited course.
We had six cars on the day and all gained intermediate to proficient status in one day, according to the certificate we were handed?
Mind you, that was probably six years ago.Don,t get me wrong it was good.
Things may have changed, but ithink i would be looking at something accredited.
Hence a good intro,Werribee and a bit of a play.
The thing is you don,t learn it all in one day.

Regards

I did the course at Werribee many years ago (in the early 2000s) in a Discovery and 6 months later in a Forester - great day and learnt HEAPS.

About 3 years ago I did the weekend course with Mountain Top Experience (MTE) and again had a ball and learnt even more HEAPS of knowledge. I now do trips with MTE and still learning heaps every time we go out. I had no theory or mechanical knowledge about my vehicle and didn't know what anything did, MTE taught me some mechanical knowledge (just the basics initially) which was excellent cause I now have some understanding about the diff locks (and many other things) and how they work in practice. As I do more trips I'm learning more 'theory', more mechanics and more skills.

Do it, where ever you choose, it's a great way to get started and then to reinforce what you have already learnt in practice.

Message me if you want contact details for MTE - can't recommend highly enough.:)
