My mother is in the CFA Sarsfield brigade...we spent several days before christmas camped at horseyard flat, just me and the kids. Then spent christmas at our mums place.......on Saturday we packed up and evacuated, the most annoying thing was tourists were still heading east along the hwy to Mallacoota and Wigan Inlet.
All the locals had put their fire plans into action, and most had left. My Mum got her partner into Bairnsdale, then went out with the brigade into the fire field on Sunday and Monday. They were promised 7 strike teams on Monday to assist. Those strike teams didnt eventuate. They were sent to Wigan Inlet, to protect tourists down at the campground. That left the Sarsfield and Mt Taylor brigade to manage a huge area.
Just spoke to Mum, she's pretty sure her place has gone as one of the houses in her road was on fire at 11pm last night, two tankers reponded, but it got too hot for them. She said in all her years in the CFA, she's never seen anything like it...it was like armegeddon.....so when you get comments like this "typical over reaction to some hot days in modern society , obviously anyone should take precautions due to weather but to say no one should go there as a blanket statement is just ridiculous IMO. Different if there are already fires in the area.... " Then you see tourists on the ABC news saying that they payed for their holiday, so their not staying away.....how selfish can you get?.......Tankers that could've been bettter used elsewhere, had to help these people get out....
Several of her Brigade members have lost their properties......

I watched the fire news on ABC news 24 for a while today. Someone needs to tell the ABC that there are fires other than in NSW.

Out of every hour, NSW gets 45 min coverage, Vic 10 mins, and QLD and SA get 5 between them. Tassie and WA don't get much of a mention at all.

It's your ABC - if you live in Sydney that is.

Best hope and wishes to all impacted. The 'fireies' are unbelievable.

Living in Montmorency about 7 ks from the Plenty fire and 10 k's from the Mill park fire. I got a warning yesterday on Vic Emergency app.
So here I am in a Melbourne suburb thinking about what to pack, how quick to get in two vehicles and which way out.
Imagine being in a remote area, fire coming so quick, no time to pack and no way out.
It could all end up being a non event, however if it is an event and you just hang about just to see what happens or carry on regardless of no plans, then it might just be to late.

Think if it makes it to Montmorency be more like the end of the world than a bush fire. Where in Monty are you?

I watched the ABC and listened to Radio National on and off today. Coverage was on Vic, NSW and Tasmania, with mentions of the Cudlee Creek fire in SA. Maybe you're missing the parts you want to hear?

ABC news tonight had cross-over to each state mentioned.

Spoke to a mate yesterday who was up at Cudgewe. He got told to leave the day before. Went to Corryong, got a sms to get ready to leave at 3 am. Went outside and he said hills were burning all around. Trucks around everywhere. Fire burnt around the town. Got no power except those with a generator. Bad phone reception. But the town seems ok. He tried to get back to Cudgewa but was stopped. Was told there was nothing much left where he wanted to go so sounds like he lost his house and caravan/s that were there.
I'm at Bright and seems to be smoke around this morning, the first I've seen it. Are a few fires around here now.

Ive written off going in the bush in the past,This year wouldn't be any different,Wait till the cooler months...In my opinion you'd need your head red to go in The High Country in the coming months...
As I've said before ad high winds and your cactus...

Spoke to a guy years ago now that was caught in the Murrindindi State Forest when Marysville burnt,he had flames all around his vehicle and said to his girlfriend we need to say good bye now, they just made it out by making the right turn at an intersection but he was a mental wreck years later....

Canned our hc trip yesterday. Was looking forward to getting back over there but just not worth the risk now. Coffin bay is looking good.

Big shout out to all fire fighters going above and beyond. Not all hero's wear capes.

Great call mate.

Thought you might have mate , some steep country where you planned to go and now with fires up around Bluff Hut/Howitt it would be madness to venture in there . I was looking forward to catching up with you blokes , but we will have plenty more trips .

Lets hope there are plenty of planned burns over winter to reduce the fuel on the ground ,While back a mate and I did a trip up to Tambo crossing area and knew DELWP had burns planned for an area close by . Those particular burns were cancelled because of protesters which was a shame as they (DELWP) had already graded and cut back foliage on a lot of the tracks in that area to make the burn go smoothly . Hope the Greens are paying attention to the devastation and loss that is happening in East Gippsland at the moment , not saying it wouldn't have happened if planned burns were conducted but certainly would have made it easier to control.
