Hi Guys,
the reason for joining in is to be able to decide wheather i should rent a 2wd Camper or 4wd Bushcamper for PER-BEROOME-DRW-ASP Route? Is the Gibb River Road that important? Do I need 4 WD for Kakadu NP? Do I need 4WD to see good spots in Kings Canyon? This is as preparation for my 1st trip to Australia in August 2009. thanks for answers.

Get a 4WD you will find it will be more usefull and be better set out for traveling to the out back and will allow you to get to more POI than a 2wd one will.

Hi ,

definitely 4WD in that territory, gives you the versatility to go into places that are off the beaten track. Also road conditions can change very quickly.

you will also need to think about communications. Satphone and UHF Radio they can be hired .

The other neccessity is to have proper ambulance cover and medical/hospital cover, a trip in a flying doctor plane will literally cost you $$$$$$$ if you are not - some travell insurances are very limited !

August is a good time to come out and see that country, here are some sites that may be of use to you in your planning. The best maps to purchase are the HEMA maps .
I use Google Earth ( free version ) for my trip planning as well

I threw this one in as well as you see this companys hire vehicles everywhere - some companies have tight restrictions on where you can take the vehicle and where you can't .

If you need any more information send us an email

Happy planning
