Hey folks, - curious to know what you think about buying these things 2nd hand. I was thinking about getting a dash mount GME or similar but don't know anything about their reliability etc. Is it worth it???

As long as you get all the mounting hardware etc... if you dont, you can get the part through ebay cheapish enough though... Personally I wouldnt get anything much older than 10 years old... they dont last forever - especially bouncing around in the bush..

2nd is ok as long it is a complete kit for your installation. Some of the 2nd prices are just short of purchasing a new Uniden.

Personally I wouldnt buy a second hand UHF unless you really know its history. You are much better off spending the bit extra and buying new.

We were thinking of buying 2nd hand then thought for the extra $150 we got a new one with a 2 yr warranty bought the new uniden scanner & uhf in one and loving it already. Only cost about 500 with an aerial.

Thanks for your input folks, I would like a new one... due to lack of funds I may have to go for a good 2nd hand unit and try to find a bargain.

At least now I know that there isn't too many reliability problems.

Any of the old GME's or an old Uniden Sundowner would be OK used. It would be better if you can test it out before buying it. You can get them serviced which might extend the range if they fall a bit short. You should be able to buy the wiring harnesses and even the bracket mounts from someboody like Olbis Communications ( Olbis Communications - GPS - Fridges - In Car Navigation ) who are a service agent in Brisbane for both brands.

They seem to hold their value though, there is not much in it if you do need a service...

You might also consider buying a 0.7 to 3 watt handheld for $100 or so until your funds recover as you will always have a use for it in the future anyway..

Agree wrt knowing its history. I bought a second hand UHF unit from a mate 7 years ago and its still going strong, but bought a 27 Mhz unit from a bloke with unknown history and its a dud.

i have brought lots of second hand gear very rare did i get a dud.i brought a uh015 remote scanner and uhf in one for 150 complete and uh400sx 150 both from cash converters in perth u no if there duds they repair or refund safe way and both working great still year later

Personally, i'd go new if you can. What are you going to use it for? If it's just for 4wding (as in, all short-ranged stuff), then a new hand-held might be a good option? The hard-wired units are fantastic, but are more expensive to install and repair, and unless you're doing long-distance convoys, or longer range comms work, can be overkill.

Having said that, i've got a second hand Tait UHF, ex-ambo radio, and haven't had any problems so far.

mate I just got myself a new one from ebay.. an oricom 5w jobbie works a treat got it for a steal @ $180 brand spanking. Has bucket loads of features that you'd expect from a higher end uniden etc. If you are not after the branch factor there are quite a few steals out there :)
