Occasional 4x4'ers: 5w handheld vs 5w vehicle UHF

I'd have to say I've gotten some great responses to my question. I think the only hesitation I had was mounting an aerial on a vehicle largely used around town by my wife but guess it can always be unscrewed as suggested. I've since discovered the rear part of the ML roof has a plastic cap (I...

Occasional 4x4'ers: 5w handheld vs 5w vehicle UHF

Based on only occasional use, I'm not sure whether I can justify buying a dedicated 5w vehicle-installed system as I'm not sure I want to mount equipment to the car, even though I acknowledge it offers the best performance. The main purpose is for safety and piece of mind when we are traveling...

    Kurrajong Discovery Trail difficulty level

Pity... we didn't see many other 4x4s Jazzajess. By the time we were on Mountain Lagoon fire trail around midday, we only saw two trail bikes heading opposite towards Bilpin. In future we will probably buy a UHF so we can call on those in the local area.

    Kurrajong Discovery Trail difficulty level

We don't have major ground clearance under our MB ML350 (209mm) but found the Blackfellows Hand track in Blue Mountains very easy with no bumps or scrapes to the underside and no issues with traction with M+S tyres. We also found a friend's Outlander completing that trail without any hiccups...

    Rediscovery of 4-wheel driving

As a kid, I was around 4WDs including Landcruisers to Range Rovers. Over the decades, got married and we ended up in a Mercedes 2003 ML350, not chosen for off-road, but to tow a boat around town. In the past few months, we've discovered a few tracks around the Blue Mountains, nothing difficult...
