Freshwater camping area has changed so much over the last 20 years.  The place is now a 4wd day trip and camping area but a car with good clearance could make it down the track as long as you didn't get off the side in the soft sand.  fishing is just out front of the day area but the last time I was there large goanna's were storking about so your food needs to be locked away.  This is the same in the camping area.  The lake was almost dry but recent rains may have filled some of it up since I was last there a few years ago.

 

There are camping fees to be paid but you can do that before getting on the barge or at Rainbow beach ranges huts
