I have an air locker in the rear, no complaints. I'd put another one in any future 4x4 before I'd do other mods. If you don't have a compressor then an E locker will probably be a cheaper way to go.
In May (I think) 4x4 Action they did a locker review which would be worth a read. From memory the reviewer had a problem not knowing when the e locker was on or off due to no light on the switch or disengaging noise. I know from my experience I have to check the switch visually or by feel to clarify position because owning a diesel drowns out any air venting noise it makes when disengaging. Depend on where you mount the switch, if you can see it easily, then the above is irrelevant.

I'll leave the discussion of air locker brands to someone else.

i think the 4wd action thing, saying they had to double check, was they were used to hearing a loud noise with air lockers and e lockers are quiet.
the people in my club who have them ( eatons e locker) swear by them. Apparently eaton make very reliable truck products so they are a great product on top of that there is no air hose from compressor to lockers to get damaged.
i want an Eatons E locker in the front and Detroit auto locker in the rear

Matt

Ring Harrops Engineering ( Aust Agent / distributor) and ask who fits the E-locker for them in your neck of the woods.
Then chat to the fitters

E-Locker is about $1300 plus install costs from memory

Cheers

I run ARB Lockers & have done for years but recently have been leanning towards a Dtroit rear & Air front.
Not in current vehicle but when i change next... reason being the rear will always be locked so you dont have to think about it & rarely use the front so air for that reason & because i would hate to have it locked while trying to turn on a big hill..

In a Patrol Air front would always be my choice & i would not bother to lock the rear a tap on the brakes is all the LSD needs... but now i have a toyota & well the LSD is pointless & useless compared to my Troll...
Just my 2 cents & if you can definately go test drive a couple of similar or same trucks with lockers so you know what you will have when finished..
cheers Towie

I had a dretoit locker in the rear of my old hilux. dont think i would bother next time and go for a airlocker, or Elocker as the amount of backlash in the diff was a painm quite a bit of shudder in it too. it did make adifference, but was a pain too

Hi Mal - wanted to wait till everything was in and going for a while - but here we are ... the Eaton is in and its a blast - I am so glad I went that way.
No seals to leak - no moisture to worry about - no airlines to contend with !

The guys that fitted it had a ball - it was the first they had done !
And they fell in love with it as well.

I have it in have used it and its one TSOB !
I cant hear it when driving - (obviously its free wheelin) but have heard others say they can hear theirs ... so I guess thats a good thing.

As I said I am not an auto mechanic - I am however a fitter of some years experience in the Aircraft elcectro mechanical area - so I am able to say these are the duck guts for me !
As far as Electro Mechanical Lockers go !

I have never owned an airlocker but having investigated the ins and outs of lockers and sought opinions on several forums and from owners here in the ACT / NSW - the Eatons win out in all areas.

Thanks for the input from the guys in here as well.

Here is the only line heading to my dashboard for on / off - and it can only be engaged when the front hubs are locked - so no accidentaly turning it on and yes I kept the Patrols LSD in the rear - so Front Locked and LSD in back - best combo for my tourer.
No airlines - no extra holes here and there - no seals - no pumps.

Cheers.

Just on that note, i got a quote to put ARB air locker on the rear diff of my 96 Range Rover and nearly fell over when i learned the price some $2200 with installation. So i guess i'm just as curious how much either e-lockers or even Auto lockers would be? Are they cheaper or dearer than the air lockers? i have no idea!!!

Ended up putting the air locker on as it is meant to be the best Elocker is only around $300 cheaper, Depnding weather you have auto hubs or not is how much you have to pay for Fitting an auto locker, autos cost around $500-600 to purchase then fitting

True the SAussie Lokka will cost about $600
Detroits now about $2000 fitted i think which is why the Air lockers are popular because you need a compressor anyway..

I'm one for the silent locking. Nothing worse than having to run a noisy compressor just to put your lockers in. I still carry a compressor to air up cuz the compressor that drives the lockers is under the bonnet, hot and only small. I have a feeling that if I plugged in to air up here it would have already reached its duty cycle because of the temp and if not it would take forever to air up.

hey Mark my compressor only runs for about 2 seconds almost every time i engage them then no noise is there something wrong with yours or mine or maybe you have an air leak

There is no hub locks as it is permanent 4wd. Might find out a little more about the auto lockers, as at the end of the day it's really only to give you the extra traction in extreme situations and when your past it your back on free diff. The traction control does do a great job, but when the going gets tuff, it has a tendandcy to engage slightly after you already lost traction which in some situations can be too late.

Hi All,

I'm having this debate with myself at the moment,

I just got a quote from Eaton / Harrop (AUS)

For the 96 80 Series,

Harrop/Eaton ELocker Toyota 40-80 Series Rear 12 Bolt 30 Spline (Rear)
Harrop/Eaton ELocker Toyota "Hilux" 10 Bolt 30 Spline (Front)

They are $1599.40 each!

The one BIG advantage I can see from the e-locker is the fact that it replaces the whole diff centre, so that would mean I am not fitting an air locker to a 450,000km diff centre?

If you buy your ARB Air locker from the US you are looking at AU$830 each + Shipping

So,

The dilemma for me is:
ARB Air Locker = $1660 + Shipping + Compresor = 2000ish
E-Locker = $3200

I'm still not sure,

Brett
