Home safe and sound.
Well, what can I say? This trip was going to be either a flat top tour that could have been done in Grandpas Caprice or it was going the complete other way and test the set-ups and quality of the strongest gear on the market.
I will forward a trip report in days to come but for now I need a few other things out of the way.
We had a few mis-haps, a few oopsies, a few sore heads and a few long hauls but most of all I think we all had a trip that will sit deep in the memory for a while to come.

Stay tuned...

Got home about half hour ago, wish my car was as well

Hope to go through my photos tomorrow.

Um, what ??
Hope it's ok !

Wondered where you all were about 5pm, thinking should be close to home by now, looks like a long day today.

In the end, made the right choice not to go, I got all my work out today, even took another urgent job for RMIT in Victoria Thurs morn, that's gotta go tomorrow, wouldn't have been able to do it if I wasn't here.

But every arvo I was thinking, camping at Coward tonight, Painted Desert tonight, etc.

Bugger . . .

Shouldn't break under normal use of course, but was it from some sort of unexpected large bump or something ?
Or did it just break without and obvious or reasonable cause ?

Good to see the crew working together to get it back to reasonable civilisation.

DAY ONE; TO PORT AUGUSTA (+30km)
330kms, LPG @ Pt. Wakefield and Pt. Augusta. $101
A massive build-up in preparation for my once a year Outback Adventure was due to a few maintenance issues and an attempted break-in. Many late nights leading up to the departure time as a result but in the end it was all worth it as the car performed faultlessly and camping from it was a breeze.
I kicked the kids out of my Heathfield class at 3pm, couldn’t wait to see my gorgeous cowgirl, loaded her stuff into the car, dropped off the dog at her friends place and back to my house by 4 for a few last minute things. We were on the road proper at 4:15. The expected drive through town that time of evening can only be best described as 1st, 2nd, brake…1st, 2nd, brake…but this was a dream run only having traffic congestion through the western suburbs. We hit Gepps Cross at 5pm, beer opened and all good times ahead. Fuelled up at Port Wakefield, grabbed a pasty and waited for Shawn to join us.
It was another good run up to Port Augusta, discussing why Snowtown with all of its history has “The Big Blade” as a tourist stop?! It was dark and I didn’t know they had windmills there! Another stop for gas, 50litres for the 200kms doing 110kph. After nearly getting a 6 foot bulbar in my rear quarter panel by an inpatient truckie we turned off up the Stuart and headed to the rendezvous spot just 30kms up the road. Des had called me during the day to let me know they had put an esky and a tyre on the side of the road for us. Very kind of him but I wondered why he would think I would need to change my tyre!! Shawn stopped just out of PA to adjust his spotlights so there was a bit of a gap between us as a result. Approaching the 27km sign I slowed down to look for the access road. There was on-coming traffic so I had to dip my lights which made it quite difficult to see the side roads. Then I saw the esky so I pulled up to wait for Shawn. I hear Mark on the UHF and he gives me some stick from the camp about missing the turn-off but then the radio went silent. I waited for Shawn to drive up and we pressed on looking for the next track in. In we go and we hit the pipeline, bang on my prediction of 9pm, I follow it up but I can’t see the crew. Damn, too far north. Brian calls me up and brings me back to the camp which is right in line with the esky.
I was confronted by the whole gang sitting around a fire and enjoying the company.
Shawn and Jacky, Nat and myself joined the circle of Luke, Mark and Scott, Wayne, Des, Brian, Dee, Brayden and Luke, Chris, Bob and Robyn. The talk and the sledging was already thick, my Folks had been accepted well by the crew…sometimes a little too much information was explained to them about my previous trips and antics!! I can't help it if the best time to take photos is sunset. :D Mum tells me that she suspects Mark and his mate Scott might be partners!
I was pretty buggered so after just a few more beers I crawled into the swag under the awning for a crisp night under the stars. Oh, and the odd Mack with a triple on the back going past….err, and the multiple, early morning freight trains too.:eek: No wonder I went sub-sober last time here!

I think luke may have earned a new nickname after this trip,

Leadfoot Luke seems to fit the bill nicely

when it broke i was not even going that hard

talking to ultimate today they suggested a break in that location comes from excessive axle wrap which can happen from hitting a washout under brakes.

Rick, what a pleasure to once again travel with U and the 4X4 Earth Team
I had no hesitation on attending this trip when it was put up on the forum
Ur Trips always take me to new ground and I was not let down, TOP TRIP :D
The scenery changed so much along the way and to find so much water in the desert was a nice surprise
Gave people a bit more than a challenge at times and others pure entertainment
Last day was a long one but home safe and now cleaning the car:(
Bit disappointed that U didn't turn left as I suggested just before we entered PA on the way back
I could have easily done that all over again :D:D:D
I'm pre booking my name with U for another / next Trip up through there
Like to suggest adding a extra day to do a bit more sight seeing
Amazing how far we travelled and only saw a micro section of our great country
Home to Home I travelled 2,299.8 Ks
Thanks again to everyone for such an enjoyable Trip

Oh, nice to meet Ur parents Bob and Robyn (Shirley)
Luv to see them on some more Trips
Sounds like they Loved their 1st 4WD Experience

Thanks Des, I had a great time too.
Yes, I agree, the days are long hauls but unfortunately time versus area means we need too. I start out a trip and then I think, well if I'm there I may as well see this, and then do that, and then just a bit more!! One more day spread out would've been great. We still managed to spend a couple of hours in the middle of each day out of the saddle. was good at Roxby/Andamooka, at William Creek, some of us at Kingoonya others at Coober Pedy, an hour or so at Mt. Ive on the last day, so not too bad.
If you look back at all of my annual trips the one thing in common is drive time and that's probably why they always end up being so epic. Simmo trips were big, Corner Country was big, Limestone was big. And yep, I'm already thinking of my next one and it will be big again.;)

I think thats what I enjoy the most, the time behind the wheel. Don't get me wrong , love the antics around the campfire , there are some moments of pure gold that are priceless for sure. The destinations are also fantastic but its the tracks driven to reach these destinations that I get the most enjoyment from, sure there can be some long days but thats half the fun.

This was the first time iv had the whole family along on one of your trips Rick and now they understand why I come home raving about how good they are, albeit a little knackered from the big days behind the wheel but nonetheless stoked to have been a part of it.

This was also our first family swaggin it trip ( normally tent or camper) and I have to admit im pretty happy with the way they all worked together when pack up and set up time came around so I must give em a pat on the back for their great effort.

Hopefully next yrs annual trip I can bring em along again but this time my youngest Luke will be able to do some driving too , he gets ticked off coz Braydon his bro can drive but he cant but his time will come.

Was a good run for the new donk aswell and she clicked over 10k now so the running in process is well underway.
I flicked over to the sub tank at the big tanks just the other side if PA to see how far we could get on the sub, we ran out going up the southern expressway hill, lol,, luckily still had about 15 ltrs in the main tank so managed to get it started without the need to prime it and got home at 8.10 so was a big day but well worth it.

Braydon says the 80 will definitely be coming on the next one too so im sure he'll be stoked with that, he and luke can share driving duties I that so they'll both be happy campers.

Overall awesome trip, our highlights were,

Every night around the campfire,

Heading out to the Stuart ck opal digs,

Having a few beers, a game of 3 ball lol, and signing our names of the wall at the William ck hotel,

Coward Springs,

Oddnadatta,

Painted Desert

Having a pizza at Coober Peedy and checking out some of the underground opal displays,

Sunday nights camp, all were good but this bush one was a cracker,

Mt Ive Station, corker spot,

The driving, love being out on those long dusty rds,

Last but by no means least the company, brilliant group to travel with and your folks Rick are worth bottling, 2 genuine beautiful people.

Thanks again Rick.

Will get some pics up later

Thanks Guys, I have had the olds on the blower a few times today already asking about double swags, "Just like Lukes!" and drawer set-ups, "Apparently you can get some made just for our car!" They had a wonderful time and they have a special spot for Des and Wayne, "Kind hearted souls." They loved the family bond between the Davis tribe and they liked the "Youngin's, Twinkle toes and that gay one!" They said the whole group were fantastic and they never felt out of their league or left behind. Their very first time on the long dirt roads turned them from newbie novices to convoy champs and corrugation veterans.

what a trip I loved every minute of it, thank you for inviting us all on a trip of a lifetime. I managed to tick a couple of things of my bucket list. We are a lucky bunch of 4wders here in Australia and to be part of the 4x4 earth community. It was great to catch up with everyone again and to meet your parents lovely people. I must say it lived up to everything I have heard over the years and more, you can definitely put my name down for your next trip.
Thanks again for the invitation cheers Wayne

Day Two

DAY TWO; PORT AUGUSTA (+30km) TO COWARD SPRINGS
476kms, LPG @ Roxby Downs $79
We all woke up very chipper, a damn sight better than the last time we stayed at the roadside camp. It was much easier to get up without the broken ribs and kitty litter in my throat. In the early hours of the morning a beautiful breakfast of egg and bacon muffins were cooked up on the campfire and a nice big mug of coffee.

After a very easy pack up we were all on the road by 9am and ready to cruise up the Stuart to get to our next stop, Roxby Downs and Andamooka. A bit of chit chat on the radio and before long we were going past Spud’s at Pimba and up north to Roxby. I called out on the radio for the convoy to do what they wanted and meet up at Andamooka ready to go at midday. Nat and I went in to get some oil from autopro and then fuelled up at the BP. Not too much has changed from the last time I came through after the Simmo trip in 2012. Shawn said G’day to Terry “This is definitely my last year!” behind the counter who reckons he remembers us from the wet crossing. He can probably remember us washing our cars behind the store and leaving a clay-topped carpark!!
We all met at Andamooka and aired down to tackle the gibber roads north of here.

I was having a chat to a few of the lads and I said “This bloody year I won’t miss that turn off and go direct.” Guess what?? I get up the road 15kms and drive alongside the airstrip, Shawn says, “Hey Rick, I think we are on the wrong road again.” Oh, CRAP, done it again!! Of course I replied, “Nah mate, just wanted to show the folks the airfield and the Desert Pea growing in the middle of the wheel tracks!”;)

Anyway, a small detour but we end up at the same spot and then head up to Stuart Creek Opal Diggings. I know the last time we came through here B.D. and myself were not in a good state but I can’t remember the terrain resembling the Simpson so much. Red sand dunes loosely covered with saltbush and flowers but only 10 feet high. Then we start to see some detours, me being up front some of the side roads were holding more water than the main roads and with Luke being in my drag he followed. It wasn’t long before we both had red bonnets and windscreens. I was a little concerned for my Oldies and their bog stock Pajero but they took it all in their stride and listened to every work relayed back through the convoy. Ever wonder why they would position themselves behind you Dessy!?
We arrived in Stuart Creek after a bit of gibber crossing and to our surprise the place was deserted.

The old weather beaten couple were nowhere to be seen but they had done some wild renovations to the caravan and annexe. They now have a thunderbox dunny and the caravan had a flue coming out of the roof. We all pulled up to have a quick look at the diggings and a bit of a look at the big 30 tonne excavator that someone must have driven all the way in!

Ok, all ponied up and ready to move. Shawn was keen to try another track out of here but the day was creeping away from us and many were looking forward to a dip in the hot spring at Coward so we opted for the direct way out to the Borefield Road along the dingo fence. This is where I made my second detour, albeit only a short one, it did require a few of the cars to turn back to cross the fence through a gate. As I was drifting away further from the fence my instinct took me across a paddock to see the track on the other side. “Back we go Folks, sorry.” One thing I did see though through the fence was a boggy track and on my side I was spinning on the grass dodging saltbush and moguls. I gave them the heads up so they opened the fence and pushed on. As I turned back, my ever faithful TEC was waiting for me to go through the fence and closed it behind me. Then I hear Shawn having an issue with the boggy section. Mark went up high on the detour track and watched as the Navara slipped in deeper and deeper. I drove up along him and a snatch was needed to get Shawn up on the high line with us.

A couple of hundred metres later and we are back down on the fence track but it’s getting boggy again. I tell them all to keep it up near the fence but after I rutted down a couple of times poor Shawn in the laden Navara is back in the slop again. This time it was Mark who helped out to rescue and we all stuck up on the high line once again. If you wanna keep up with the big boys you need a big toy Mate!:p
We pop out on the Borefield near the dog fence and we are back up to 100kph to make good time for the next 130 odd kms to get into Coward Springs. The owners and operators of the park accommodated us very well and gave us an open area for us to fit in, even bought down a couple of fire bins for us to use.

Well we had shorts on already but towels and drinks were grabbed even before the turbo timers had stopped the car. With no one really knowing where the spring was, we headed for a lap of the joint to find them. Eventually we had to ask a traveller, there’s one beer down already as I’m power-walking around the place and picking up the thirst of a camel. We see a bit of a green area and we can hear a pump so the pace picked up nearly to a jog! Get stuffed…I’m on holidays! And then we see it, heaven. Umm, is that the small teaser, plunge pool? Oh, no, this is it hey?? I guess materials are scarce out here except for railway sleepers so the pool is sort of set by the length of the sleepers, anyway, it could’ve been a bath tub for all I care, I wanted in. Shawn is first in and he is dancing around a bit. “What’s the matter mate?” “Um, I think these are the not so hot springs, or the tepid springs!” We all still drop in to the stand-up pool and it was bloody wonderful, I don’t care what anybody says, it was welcomed after a day on the dusty roads and throwing sleepers on the roof racks.;)
The Davis tribe venture over and some bloke in a fresh set of cut-off denim shorts (and not just above the knee either!). Wayne had no shorts so he sacrificed a pair of jeans and fashioned them into a set of Daisy Dukes.:D

Remember the beers I had when power walking like a prime minister? Well, they have caught up with me! I had to get out, the sun had gone down and it was freezing. Walking back to camp in a pair of wet shorts and a wet towel draped over the shoulders, my teeth were chattering and my penis was like a press-stud. No need for that leak anymore! The others had a good fire going and us bathers all getting in line, crowding around like a Wednesday at centrelink. After a few hot showers and dinner we were once again sitting around the fire talking about the travels we had just had and a few of the expectations to come. With Shawn asking Wayne for some pointers to keeping a beautiful beard, he says to him, "Well Shawn, you know what they say?" "If you Dad doesn't have a beard...you have two Mums!":D:D
